Answer PaperPaper Code: 123BJMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Define elasticity.

2 marks

Answer

Elasticity is the property of a material by virtue of which it regains its original shape and size after the removal of the external deforming force, provided the stress does not exceed the elastic limit.

b

Determine the Young’s Modulus of a brass rod of diameter 30 mm and of length 300 mm which is subjected to a tensile load of 30 kN when the extension of the rod is equal to 0.3 mm.

3 marks

Answer

Given: Diameter d = 30 mm, Length L = 300 mm, Load P = 30 kN = 30000 N, Extension δL = 0.3 mm.

Area A = (π/4) * d^2 = (π/4) * 30^2 = 706.86 mm^2.

Stress σ = P / A = 30000 / 706.86 = 42.44 N/mm^2.

Strain ε = δL / L = 0.3 / 300 = 0.001.

Young's Modulus E = σ / ε = 42.44 / 0.001 = 42440 N/mm^2 or 42.44 GPa.
