The distance between two points measured with a 20m chain was recorded as 350m. It was afterwards found that the chain was 3 cm too long. What was the true distance between the points?

2 marks

Answer

True length of chain (L') = 20.03 m, Nominal length (L) = 20 m, Measured distance (l) = 350 m. True distance = (L'/L) × l = (20.03/20) × 350 = 350.525 m.

b

What do you mean by great triangle and great circle?

3 marks

Answer

A great circle is the intersection of the earth's surface with any plane passing through the earth's center, representing the shortest distance between two points on a sphere. A great triangle is a spherical triangle formed by the intersection of three great circles on the surface of the earth, used in geodetic surveying to account for the earth's curvature.

In running a fly levels from a bench – mark of RL 139.605m, the following readings were obtained: Backsight - 1.445, 2.595, 1.315, 2.825; Foresight - 0.475, 1.135, 0.495. From the last position the instrument, six pegs at 15-m intervals are to be set out on a uniform rising gradient of 1 in 50; the first peg is to have an RL of 143.000. Enter the readings on a level field book and work out the staff readings on the top of pegs.

Two instrument stations were selected 150m apart in the same vertical plane as the object. The vertical angles observed to the two stations were 12° 13′30″ and 9° 10′40″. The readings on a staff held at a bench mark of RL 1080.00m were 2.35 and 1.05m from the stations, the instrument reading being higher for the station further from the object. Find the RL of the object if the vertical angles were read on mark 5m from the ground.

A tacheometer is fitted with an anallactic lens and the constants are 100 and 0. The reading corresponding to the cross-wire on a staff held vertical on a point B was 2.295m when sighted from A. If the vertical angle was + 25° and the horizontal distance AB was 150m, calculate the stadia wire readings and thus show that the two intercept intervals are equal. Using these values calculate the level of B if that of A was 50.0m and the height of the instrument is 1.15m.
