Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.

Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.

In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

State the Principle of surveying.

2 marks

Answer

The fundamental principle of surveying is to work from the whole to the part. This ensures that major control points are established with high precision first, and minor details are filled in later, which prevents the accumulation of errors throughout the survey.

b

State Magnetic Meridian and type of meridians.

3 marks

Answer

The Magnetic Meridian is the direction indicated by a freely suspended, balanced magnetic needle unaffected by local attraction. The types of meridians are: 1) True Meridian (geographic north-south line), 2) Magnetic Meridian, 3) Grid Meridian (parallel to a central meridian of a grid system), and 4) Arbitrary Meridian (any convenient direction chosen for a local survey).

c

Define Benchmark and its importance in surveying.
