Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University Hyderabad B.Tech II SURVEYING Previous Question Paper (September/October - 2023 - R16)
Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
State the Principle of surveying.
Answer
The fundamental principle of surveying is to work from the whole to the part. This ensures that major control points are established with high precision first, and minor details are filled in later, which prevents the accumulation of errors throughout the survey.
State Magnetic Meridian and type of meridians.
Answer
The Magnetic Meridian is the direction indicated by a freely suspended, balanced magnetic needle unaffected by local attraction. The types of meridians are: 1) True Meridian (geographic north-south line), 2) Magnetic Meridian, 3) Grid Meridian (parallel to a central meridian of a grid system), and 4) Arbitrary Meridian (any convenient direction chosen for a local survey).

Part B
A chain line ABC crosses a river, B and C being on the near and distant banks respectively. The respective bearings of C and A taken at D, a point 60 m measured at right angles to AB from B are 280° and 190°, AB being 32 m. Find the width of the river.

The following ten readings were taken with a level, the instrument being shifted after the fifth and eighth readings: 1.315, 0.965, -2.345, 1.05, 0.875, 1.155, 1.305, 1.675, 1.345 and 1.875. The RL of the first turning point is 100.000. Find the reduced levels of the remaining points by the height of collimation method.

To determine the gradient between two points A and B a tacheometer was set up at another station C and the following observations were taken, keeping the staff vertical.
| Staff at | Vertical Angle | Stadia Readings (m) |
|---|---|---|
| A | +4°20'00'' | 1.300, 1.610, 1.920 |
| B | +0°10'40'' | 1.100, 1.410, 1.720 |
If the horizontal angle ACB is 35°20'00''. Determine the average gradient between A and B, Take constants k = 100, c = 0.
