JNTU B.Tech II ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES Previous Question Paper (February - 2024 - R13)
Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
What is food chain? Mention the role of food chain in an ecosystem.
Answer
A food chain is a linear sequence of organisms through which nutrients and energy pass as one organism eats another. It represents the feeding relationship in an ecosystem, starting from producers and moving through various levels of consumers and decomposers.
The primary role of a food chain is to facilitate the transfer of energy and cycling of nutrients within an ecosystem. It maintains ecological balance by regulating population sizes at different trophic levels and serves as a pathway for the movement of organic matter from primary producers to higher-order consumers.
Define ecosystem. Mention the importance of ‘keystone’ species in an ecosystem.
Answer
An ecosystem is a functional unit of nature where living organisms (biotic components) interact with each other and with their non-living (abiotic) physical environment, such as sunlight, air, water, and soil, to exchange energy and nutrients.
A keystone species is a plant or animal that plays a unique and crucial role in the way an ecosystem functions. Their importance lies in the following:
- They maintain the structure and diversity of the ecosystem, often preventing a single species from dominating.
- If a keystone species is removed, the ecosystem may undergo dramatic shifts or collapse, as other species depend on them for survival.
- They act as indicators of ecosystem health and are essential for maintaining ecological balance and stability.
