PART - A

(25 Marks)

1.a

What are the various channel bed slopes?

2 marks

Answer

Channel bed slopes are classified based on the relationship between the normal depth (yn) and the critical depth (yc) of the flow. The main types are:

  • Mild slope (M): Where the normal depth is greater than the critical depth (yn > yc).
  • Steep slope (S): Where the normal depth is less than the critical depth (yn < yc).
  • Critical slope (C): Where the normal depth is equal to the critical depth (yn = yc).
  • Horizontal slope (H): Where the bed slope is zero (S0 = 0).
  • Adverse slope (A): Where the bed slopes upward in the direction of flow (S0 < 0).
1.b

Differentiate between Open channel flow and Pipe flow.

3 marks

Answer

The differences between open channel flow and pipe flow are as follows:

  • Flow condition: Open channel flow occurs under atmospheric pressure, whereas pipe flow occurs under pressure higher or lower than atmospheric pressure.
  • Surface contact: In open channel flow, the liquid surface is in direct contact with the atmosphere (free surface). In pipe flow, the liquid completely fills the cross-section of the conduit, and there is no free surface.
  • Driving force: Open channel flow is driven by the gravitational force due to the slope of the channel bed. Pipe flow is primarily driven by hydraulic pressure gradient or mechanical energy (pumps).
