Answer PaperPaper Code: 134CDMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

PART- A

125 marks
a

Define torsional rigidity of a shaft.

2 marks

Answer

Torsional rigidity is defined as the product of the modulus of rigidity (G) and the polar moment of inertia (J) of the shaft section. It represents the torque required to produce a unit angle of twist per unit length of the shaft.

Torsional Rigidity = G × J
b

What are the assumptions in torsion theory?

3 marks

Answer

  • The material of the shaft is homogeneous and isotropic.
  • The shaft is perfectly straight and of uniform circular cross-section.
  • Plane sections perpendicular to the axis of the shaft remain plane after twisting.
  • Twist is uniform along the length of the shaft.
  • The stresses induced are within the elastic limit.
c
