Part A

125 marks
a

State maximum shear strain energy theory of failure.

2 marks

Answer

The maximum shear strain energy theory (also known as Von Mises-Hencky theory) states that failure occurs when the total strain energy per unit volume due to distortion at a point in a stressed material reaches or exceeds the strain energy per unit volume at the elastic limit in a simple tension test.

b

What are the differences between closely coiled and open coiled helical spring?

3 marks

Answer

Closely coiled helical springs have a small helix angle (usually less than 10 degrees), meaning the wire is subjected primarily to torsion, and the bending effect is negligible. Open coiled helical springs have a large helix angle, resulting in significant bending and twisting moments acting simultaneously on the wire cross-section.
