Answer PaperPaper Code: 114DPMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a
Define polar modulus.
2 marks

Answer

Polar modulus (Zp) is defined as the ratio of the polar moment of inertia (J) to the radius of the shaft (R). It represents the torsional strength of the shaft section.

b
Find the torque which a shaft of 50 mm diameter can transmit safely, if the allowable shear stress is 75 N/mm2.
3 marks

Answer

Given: Diameter (d) = 50 mm, Allowable shear stress (τ) = 75 N/mm2.

Using the torsion equation: T = (π/16) × τ × d3

T = (π/16) × 75 × 503 = 1,840,776 N-mm = 1.84 kNm.
