JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II Year STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Previous Question Paper (May - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks.
Part A
Distinguish between statically determinate and indeterminate with examples.
Answer
A structure is statically determinate if its internal forces and reactions can be determined using only the equations of static equilibrium. Example: Simply supported beam. A structure is statically indeterminate if the number of unknown reactions exceeds the number of available equilibrium equations, requiring compatibility equations for solution. Example: Fixed beam.
Write down the compatibility condition for a fixed beam.
Answer
For a fixed beam, the compatibility conditions ensure that the boundary conditions at the supports are satisfied. Specifically, at both fixed ends, the slope (θ) and the deflection (δ) must be zero:

A fixed beam AB span 10 metre carries point load 180kN and clockwise moment of 160kN at a distance 3m and 6m from left end respectively. If the left support sinks by 15mm, find the fixed end moments and reactions at the supports. Take EI = 6000kNm2.
