List and explain some applications of large screen displays.

8 marks

Answer

Large screen displays are essential in environments where information must be shared simultaneously with a group or viewed from a distance. Key applications include:

  • Command and Control Centers: Used in military, emergency response, and traffic management to monitor real-time data, maps, and video feeds across multiple sources on a single large canvas.
  • Digital Signage and Advertising: Deployed in public spaces like airports, malls, and stadiums to deliver dynamic, high-impact visual content and advertisements to large audiences.
  • Educational and Corporate Presentations: Used in lecture halls and boardrooms to facilitate interactive learning and collaborative meetings, allowing complex diagrams and data to be clearly visible to all participants.
  • Entertainment and Sports: Large-scale LED walls or projection systems provide immersive viewing experiences for live sporting events, concerts, and cinema.
  • Scientific Visualization: Researchers use large displays to project complex 3D models, such as molecular structures or meteorological simulations, enabling detailed group analysis.
b

Explain about the characteristics of Direct View Storage Tube devices.

7 marks

Answer

The Direct View Storage Tube (DVST) is a specialized CRT display that maintains an image without the need for constant refreshing. Its primary characteristics include:

  • Image Storage: The device uses a secondary wire mesh coated with a dielectric material behind the phosphor screen. Electrons from the flood gun are stored on this mesh, which continuously pulls electrons toward the phosphor to maintain the image.
  • No Refreshing: Unlike standard CRTs, the image does not flicker because it does not require a refresh cycle. This allows for the display of very complex pictures without performance degradation.
  • Limited Interaction: Because the image is stored on the mesh, selective erasure is difficult. To modify a part of the image, the entire screen usually needs to be cleared and redrawn.
  • Low Brightness and Contrast: The display typically has lower brightness and contrast levels compared to modern display technologies, and it does not support color.
  • High Resolution: DVSTs are capable of producing very high-resolution line drawings, making them suitable for early CAD and engineering applications where precision was prioritized over animation.
