Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions. iv) Use of only IS456 and Design charts for columns from SP16 is allowed.
Part A
Write down the advantages of limit state method over working stress method.
Answer
The limit state method provides a more realistic assessment of safety by considering the actual behavior of materials at ultimate loads and applying partial safety factors to both loads and material strengths. Unlike the working stress method, it accounts for the non-linear stress-strain relationships and provides a more economical design by utilizing the reserve strength of materials.
Write the assumptions made in limit state of collapse by flexure.
Answer
- Plane sections normal to the axis remain plane after bending.
- The maximum strain in concrete at the outermost compression fiber is taken as 0.0035 in bending.
- The relationship between the compressive stress distribution in concrete and the strain in concrete may be assumed to be rectangular, trapezoidal, parabolic, or any other shape which results in prediction of strength in substantial agreement with the results of test.
- The tensile strength of concrete is ignored.
- The stresses in the reinforcement are derived from the representative stress-strain curve for the type of steel used.
