JNTU B.Tech III FUNDAMENTALS OF ENGINEERING MATERIALS Previous Question Paper (May/June - 2019 - R16)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
Part A
Describe the procedure to find out miller indices for a given coordinates.
Answer
- Identify the intercepts of the plane on the crystallographic axes (x, y, z) in terms of lattice parameters.
- Take the reciprocals of these intercepts.
- Reduce these reciprocals to the smallest set of integers by multiplying by a common factor.
- Enclose the resulting integers in parentheses as (hkl).
Calculate the packing efficiency of FCC structure.
Answer
In an FCC structure, the atoms touch along the face diagonal. If 'a' is the lattice parameter and 'r' is the atomic radius, the face diagonal is 4r = a√2, so a = 2r√2. The number of atoms per unit cell is 4. The packing efficiency is calculated as:
