a

Develop relationship between degree of saturation, void ratio, water content and Specific gravity.

8 marks

Answer

To derive the relationship, consider a soil mass with a total volume V, volume of voids Vv, and volume of solids Vs. The fundamental definitions are:

Void ratio e = Vv / Vs

Water content w = Ww / Ws

Degree of saturation S = Vw / Vv

Specific gravity G = γs / γw = Ws / (Vs γw)

From the definition of degree of saturation, Vw = S Vv. Since Vv = e Vs, we have Vw = S e Vs.

The weight of water is Ww = Vw γw = S e Vs γw. Substituting Vs = Ws / (G γw), we get:

Ww = (S e Ws γw) / (G γw) = (S e Ws) / G

Rearranging this gives the fundamental relationship:

S e = w G

Calculate the void ratio, porosity and degree of saturation of a soil sample if it has a wet density of 2.0g/cc and dry density of 1.8g/cc. Take specific gravity of solids as 2.7.

7 marks

Answer

Given: Wet density ρ = 2.0 g/cc, Dry density ρd = 1.8 g/cc, Specific gravity G = 2.7, Density of water ρw = 1.0 g/cc.

1. Calculate void ratio e:

ρd = (G ρw) / (1 + e)
1.8 = (2.7 * 1.0) / (1 + e)
1 + e = 2.7 / 1.8 = 1.5
e = 0.5

2. Calculate porosity n:

n = e / (1 + e) = 0.5 / 1.5 = 0.333 or 33.3%

3. Calculate water content w:

ρ = ρd(1 + w)
2.0 = 1.8(1 + w)
1 + w = 1.111
w = 0.111

4. Calculate degree of saturation S using Se = wG:

S * 0.5 = 0.111 * 2.7
S = 0.2997 / 0.5 = 0.5994 or 59.94%
