a

What are the different types of RCC beam sections based on the area of steel reinforcement provided?

2 marks

Answer

Based on the area of steel reinforcement, RCC beam sections are classified as: 1) Under-reinforced section, where the steel reaches its yield strain before the concrete reaches its ultimate compressive strain; 2) Over-reinforced section, where concrete reaches its ultimate strain first; and 3) Balanced section, where both concrete and steel reach their respective limiting strains simultaneously.

b

Distinguish between working stress method of design and limit state method of design.

3 marks

Answer

The Working Stress Method (WSM) is a deterministic approach based on linear elastic theory using factors of safety for materials, whereas the Limit State Method (LSM) is a probabilistic approach that considers the ultimate strength and serviceability requirements using partial safety factors for both loads and materials.
