Derive Stress Block Parameters as per the Limit State Method.

5 marks

Answer

The stress block parameters are derived based on the assumptions of the Limit State Method (LSM) to represent the actual stress distribution in the compression zone of a reinforced concrete section at the ultimate limit state.

  • Compressive Force (C): The total compressive force is the volume of the stress block. Given the parabolic-rectangular stress distribution, the area of the stress block is calculated as:
    Area = (2/3) * xu * (0.446 fck) + (xu - 3/7 xu) * (0.446 fck) = 0.36 fck xu
  • Lever Arm (z): The centroid of the stress block is located at a distance from the extreme compression fiber. For the combined parabolic-rectangular shape, the centroid is at:
    ȳ = 0.42 xu
  • Resultant Force Location: The total compressive force 0.36 fck b xu acts at a distance of 0.42 xu from the extreme compression fiber, resulting in a lever arm of (d - 0.42 xu).

Compare ‘Working Stress Method’ and Limit State Design of RCC Structures. Explain the answer with suitable examples.

Answer

FeatureWorking Stress Method (WSM)Limit State Design (LSM)
BasisElastic theory; linear stress-strainPlastic theory; non-linear stress-strain
SafetyFactor of Safety (FoS)Partial Safety Factors
ServiceabilityImplicitly satisfiedExplicitly checked

WSM assumes concrete is elastic, which does not reflect the actual behavior of concrete near failure. LSM recognizes the actual non-linear stress-strain curve, providing a more realistic and economical design. For example, in a beam, WSM would result in a larger section size compared to LSM for the same load, as LSM accounts for the reserve strength in the plastic range.

The cross-section of an RCC beam of rectangular section is to be designed to resist a bending moment of 65 kNm. Assuming the width of beam as half the effective depth, determine the dimensions of the beam and the area of tension reinforcement for the balanced section. Use M20 grade Concrete and Fe 500 grade HYSD bars. Adopt Limit State Method of design.
