Briefly explain the importance of roads in India and characteristics of road transport.

8 marks

Answer

Road transport is the backbone of the Indian economy, serving as the primary mode for short to medium-distance travel and the only means of connectivity for remote, rural, and hilly regions. Its importance lies in providing door-to-door service, facilitating the movement of agricultural produce to markets, supporting industrial growth, and acting as a feeder system for railways, ports, and airports. It is essential for national integration, defense logistics, and social development.

The characteristics of road transport include:

  • Flexibility: Routes and schedules can be adjusted easily to meet specific requirements.
  • Accessibility: It provides connectivity to the most remote corners where other modes cannot reach.
  • Door-to-door service: It eliminates the need for intermediate loading and unloading, reducing transit time and handling costs.
  • Reliability and Speed: It is highly reliable for short distances and offers faster transit for perishable goods.
  • Capital Investment: Requires lower initial investment compared to railways or airways.
b

Explain obligatory points. With sketches, discuss how these control the alignment.

7 marks

Answer

Obligatory points are specific locations that the road alignment must pass through or avoid to ensure economic, social, or technical feasibility. These points act as constraints that dictate the path of the highway.

Types of obligatory points include:

  • Points through which the road must pass: These include bridges across rivers, mountain passes, or intermediate towns/industrial centers that require connectivity. The alignment is forced to pass through these points to serve the intended purpose.
  • Points to be avoided: These include unsuitable terrain such as marshy lands, unstable soil, religious sites, historical monuments, or expensive properties. The alignment must be diverted to bypass these areas to minimize construction costs and environmental impact.

The alignment is controlled by these points by creating a series of control lines. For example, if a road must cross a river, the alignment is fixed at the bridge site, and the road is then designed to approach this point at an angle that satisfies geometric design standards. Similarly, to avoid a hill, the alignment is shifted to follow the contours, ensuring the gradient remains within permissible limits.
