JNTU B.Tech III WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING-I Previous Question Paper (July/August - 2023 - R13)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Draw a neat sketch of Hydrological cycle.
Answer
The hydrological cycle is a continuous process involving the circulation of water from the earth's surface to the atmosphere and back. A sketch would represent: 1. Evaporation from oceans and land surfaces, 2. Transpiration from plants, 3. Cloud formation (condensation), 4. Precipitation (rain, snow), 5. Infiltration into the soil, and 6. Surface runoff returning to water bodies.
Write a short note on “Double mass curve”.
Answer
The Double Mass Curve is a graphical technique used to check the consistency of a rain gauge record. It involves plotting the cumulative annual rainfall of the station in question against the cumulative average annual rainfall of several nearby representative stations. A change in the slope of the resulting straight line indicates an inconsistency in the data, often caused by a change in gauge location, exposure, or observation procedure.

A 20cm diameter well penetrates fully a confined aquifer of thickness 25m. When the well is pumped at a rate of 200 liters/minute. The steady drawdown in the two observation wells located at 10m and 100m distance from the pumping well are found to be 3.05m and 0.05m respectively. Calculate the permeability and the transmissivity of the aquifer.

An irrigation canal has GCA of 80,000 hectares out of which 85% is culturable irrigable. The intensity of irrigation for Kharif season is 30% and for Rabi season is 60%. Find the discharge required at the head of the canal if the duty at its head is 800 hectares/cumecs for Kharif season and 1700 hectares /cumec for Rabi season.
