JNTU B.Tech III WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING Previous Question Paper (August/September - 2024 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
Explain “Hydrological cycle” with neat sketch.
Answer
The Hydrological cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. It involves processes such as evaporation from water bodies, transpiration from vegetation, condensation into clouds, precipitation, and subsequent runoff or infiltration back into groundwater or surface water bodies. A sketch would illustrate these components in a circular path connecting the atmosphere, land, and oceans.
Write short note on “Evaporation losses from reservoir.”
Answer
Evaporation losses from a reservoir depend on factors like temperature, wind speed, humidity, and surface area. It is a major cause of water loss in reservoirs, especially in arid regions. Methods to reduce these losses include using chemical films (monomolecular layers like cetyl alcohol), floating covers, or windbreaks to minimize the vapor pressure gradient at the water surface.

A 30 cm diameter well completely penetrates an unconfined aquifer of saturated depth 40 m. After a long period of pumping at a steady rate of 1500 lpm, the drawdown in two observation wells are located at 25 m and 75 m from the pumping well were found to be 3.5 m and 2 m respectively. Determine the transmissibility of the aquifer.

A field test for permeability consists in observing the required for a tracer to travel between two observation wells. A tracer was found to take 10 hour travel between two wells 50 m apart when the difference in the water surface elevation in them was 0.5 m. The mean particle size of aquifer is 2 mm and the porosity of the medium is 0.3. If kinematic viscosity is 0.01cm2/s. Estimate the co efficient of permeability and intrinsic permeability of the aquifer.

The GCA for an irrigation canal is 20,000 hectares out of which 75% is CCA. The intensity of irrigation is 40% for rabi and 10% for rice. If kor period is 4 weeks for Rabi and 2.5 weeks for rice, determine the outlet discharge, outlet factors for Rabi and rice may be assumed as 1800 ha/cumec and 800 ha/cumec. Also calculate delta for each case.

A certain crop is grown in an area of 4000 hectares which is fed by a canal system. The data pertaining to irrigation are: Field capacity of soil = 25%; Optimum moisture = 12%; Permanent wilting point = 10%; Effective depth of root zone = 80cm; Relative density of soil = 1.4. If the frequency of irrigation is 10 days and overall efficiency is 23%, find (i) the daily consumptive use (ii) the water discharge in m3/sec required in the canal.
