JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech III ADVANCED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Previous Question Paper (August/September - 2024 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
What is meant by static and kinematic indeterminacy?
Answer
Static indeterminacy is the number of unknown reactions or internal forces that cannot be determined using the equations of static equilibrium alone. Kinematic indeterminacy, or degrees of freedom, is the number of independent joint displacements (translations and rotations) required to define the deformed shape of a structure.
What is the effect of rib shortening on two hinged arch?
Answer
Rib shortening in a two-hinged arch acts similarly to a temperature drop, causing the arch to contract. This effect reduces the horizontal thrust developed at the supports, which in turn increases the bending moments at various sections of the arch compared to an ideal arch where rib shortening is neglected.
