Part A
Write short notes on Local of Global co-ordinates
Answer
Local coordinates are defined relative to an individual structural element, typically with the x-axis aligned along the member's longitudinal axis. They are used to formulate element stiffness matrices, where forces and displacements are expressed in terms of the member's own orientation.
Global coordinates provide a single, consistent reference system for the entire structure. All element stiffness matrices must be transformed into this common system using rotation matrices before they can be assembled into the global stiffness matrix to solve for the displacements of the complete structure.
What do you understand by degrees of freedom?
Answer
The degrees of freedom (DOF) of a structural system represent the minimum number of independent coordinates or displacements required to uniquely define the deformed shape or configuration of the structure under a given loading condition. In structural analysis, these correspond to the possible independent nodal displacements and rotations that a structure can undergo.
For a structure to be analyzed, the total degrees of freedom are categorized into:
- Kinematic Indeterminacy: The number of unknown nodal displacements that must be determined to solve the structure.
- Constraints: The degrees of freedom that are restricted by supports (e.g., a fixed support has zero degrees of freedom, while a roller support allows translation along the surface).
Identifying the degrees of freedom is essential for establishing the stiffness matrix of the structure, as it defines the size of the matrix and the number of simultaneous equilibrium equations to be solved.
