JNTU B.Tech III ADVANCED STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS Previous Question Paper (February - 2023 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
State Castigliono’s second theorem.
Answer
Castigliano’s second theorem states that for a linearly elastic structure, the partial derivative of the total strain energy with respect to any specific force (or load) acting at a point is equal to the displacement of the point of application of that force in the direction of the force.
List the advantages and disadvantages of two hinged arches.
Answer
Advantages: Two-hinged arches are statically indeterminate to the first degree, making them more rigid and structurally efficient than three-hinged arches. They are less sensitive to temperature changes compared to fixed arches.
Disadvantages: They are more complex to analyze than three-hinged arches. Because they are indeterminate, their internal forces are affected by support settlements, which requires precise foundation design.

A two-hinged parabolic arch has a span of 30 m and central rise of 5 m. It is loaded with a udl of 8 kN/m on the left 9 m length. Locate and find the magnitude of maximum bending moment. Also find the shear force and normal thrust at quarter span section from the left support. Assume that moment of inertia at a section varies as secant of the slope. Neglect the effect of rib shortening.
