PART A
What is a short circuit fault?
Answer
A short circuit fault is an abnormal condition in an electrical system where the current flows through an unintended path with very low impedance, bypassing the normal load. This results in an extremely high magnitude of current, known as the fault current, which can cause severe thermal and mechanical damage to electrical equipment and conductors.
Key characteristics of a short circuit fault include:
- A sudden and significant decrease in the impedance of the circuit.
- A rapid rise in current, often many times the rated full-load current of the system.
- A significant drop in system voltage near the point of the fault.
Where I is the fault current, V is the system phase voltage, and Z_f is the very low fault impedance. These faults are typically caused by insulation failure, physical damage to cables, or accidental contact between conductors.
What is the purpose of earth wire?
Answer
The primary purpose of an earth wire (also known as a protective conductor) is to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment by providing a low-impedance path for fault currents. Its functions include:
- Fault Current Path: In the event of an insulation failure where a live conductor touches the metallic casing of an appliance, the earth wire provides a low-resistance path for the fault current to flow back to the source. This high current triggers protective devices like Miniature Circuit Breakers (MCBs) or Residual Current Devices (RCDs), which disconnect the supply immediately.
- Potential Equalization: It maintains the exposed conductive parts of electrical equipment at or near earth potential (zero volts), preventing the buildup of dangerous touch voltages on the chassis.
- Protection Against Electric Shock: By ensuring that the metallic enclosure of an appliance does not attain a high potential relative to the ground, it significantly reduces the risk of lethal electric shock to users who may come into contact with the equipment.
- Lightning Protection: In specific configurations, it helps dissipate surge currents caused by lightning strikes or atmospheric discharges safely into the ground, protecting the insulation of the electrical system.
Where I is the fault current, V is the supply voltage, and Zf is the impedance of the fault loop. A low Zf ensures a high I, facilitating rapid disconnection.
