Answer PaperPaper Code: 136BBMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B.
ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions.
iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
iv) Use of IS 800, IS 875 (part 3) and steel tables is allowed.

PART – A

125 marks
a

Define the efficiency of a joint.

2 marks

Answer

The efficiency of a joint is defined as the ratio of the strength of the joint to the strength of the un-jointed solid plate, expressed as a percentage.

b

Explain the Prying action of a bolt.

3 marks

Answer

Prying action is an additional tensile force induced in bolts due to the flexibility of the connected parts (like flange plates) when subjected to an external load. As the connection deforms, the plate acts as a lever, increasing the force on the bolt beyond the applied external load.

c

What are the factors affecting the strength of a steel column?

2

Determine the design tensile strength of a lap joint connecting two steel, each of size 300 mm × 10 mm, using the configuration of bolts as shown in Figure. If the yield and ultimate tensile stress of the steel are 250 MPa and 410 MPa, respectively. Use M20 bolts of grade 4.6. Adopt the staggered pitch = 75 mm and gauge = 60 mm.
