Part A

1.a

Define serviceability limit state.

2 marks

Answer

The serviceability limit state refers to the condition under which a structure remains fit for its intended use and occupancy during its design life. It ensures that the structure does not experience excessive deflections, vibrations, or local damage that could impair its appearance, durability, or the comfort of its users, even if the structure remains structurally sound and safe against collapse.

1.b

Mention any types of serviceability limit states applicable to steel structures.

3 marks

Answer

Serviceability limit states for steel structures ensure the functional performance and comfort of users under normal service conditions. The primary types include:

  1. Deflection: Limiting the vertical or horizontal displacement of structural members (such as beams or trusses) to prevent damage to non-structural elements like partitions or glazing and to maintain aesthetic appearance.
  2. Vibration: Controlling the dynamic response of floors or bridges to ensure human comfort and prevent structural fatigue caused by rhythmic or impact loading.
  3. Durability: Ensuring the structure maintains its integrity against environmental factors such as corrosion or chemical attack over its intended design life.
