a

Define earthquake and write the causes of earthquake.

7 marks

Answer

An earthquake is the sudden shaking or vibration of the Earth's crust caused by the rapid release of energy in the Earth's lithosphere, which generates seismic waves. This energy release typically occurs due to the sudden displacement of rock masses along geological faults.

The primary causes of earthquakes include:

  • Tectonic Movements: The most common cause, resulting from the movement of tectonic plates. Stress accumulates at plate boundaries until the frictional resistance is overcome, causing a sudden slip.
  • Volcanic Activity: Magma movement within the Earth's crust can trigger seismic events as it forces its way through rock layers.
  • Human-Induced (Anthropogenic) Factors: Activities such as large-scale reservoir impoundment, deep-well injection of fluids, mining, and underground nuclear explosions can induce tremors.
  • Faulting: Sudden rupture along existing fault lines due to tectonic forces.
b

Discuss about analysis of earthquake waves.

Answer

Earthquake waves, or seismic waves, are analyzed based on their propagation characteristics, velocity, and the medium through which they travel. They are broadly categorized into Body Waves and Surface Waves.

1. Body Waves: These travel through the interior of the Earth.

  • P-waves (Primary/Compressional): These are longitudinal waves that cause particles to move in the direction of wave propagation. They are the fastest waves and can travel through solids, liquids, and gases.
  • S-waves (Secondary/Shear): These are transverse waves that cause particle motion perpendicular to the direction of propagation. They only travel through solids and arrive after P-waves.

2. Surface Waves: These travel along the Earth's surface and are responsible for most structural damage.

  • Love Waves: These produce horizontal shearing motion perpendicular to the direction of travel.
  • Rayleigh Waves: These produce an elliptical, rolling motion similar to ocean waves, involving both vertical and horizontal displacement.

The analysis involves using seismographs to record the arrival times and amplitudes of these waves. By measuring the time interval between the arrival of P-waves and S-waves at multiple stations, the epicenter of the earthquake is located through triangulation. The frequency content and duration of these waves are critical for seismic design, as different structures respond differently depending on their natural period relative to the wave period.

For a room of 8 m × 4 m internal dimensions, the walls are constructed with 200 mm thick modular bricks, having wall thickness 300 mm in cement mortar 1:6. The load on the roof is 8 kN/m2. Check the long wall for vertical bending and design the R.C.C lintel band for the given data.

Design seismic coefficient = 0.10; Height of wall = 4.2 m

Lintel height from plinth = 2.4 m; Unit weight of masonry = 20 kN/m3.
