JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech III FABRICATION PROCESSES Previous Question Paper (March - 2024 - R16)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
List of different types of pattern used for casting.
Answer
Patterns are used in casting to create a mold cavity. The common types of patterns include:
- Single-piece pattern: The simplest type, used for objects with simple geometry.
- Split-piece pattern: Made in two or more parts to facilitate withdrawal from the mold.
- Match-plate pattern: Two parts of the pattern are mounted on opposite sides of a plate for mass production.
- Cope and drag pattern: Similar to split patterns but with the two halves mounted on separate plates.
- Sweep pattern: Used for generating large circular or symmetric shapes by rotating a profile.
- Loose-piece pattern: Used when parts of the pattern would otherwise prevent withdrawal from the mold.
- Follow-board pattern: Used when the parting line is irregular.
What is the function of risers in casting?
Answer
The primary function of a riser, also known as a feeder, is to act as a reservoir of molten metal that compensates for the volumetric shrinkage that occurs as the casting cools and solidifies. By remaining molten longer than the casting itself, the riser feeds liquid metal into the mold cavity to prevent the formation of shrinkage cavities or porosity.
Additionally, risers serve to:
- Provide a path for the escape of gases and air trapped within the mold cavity.
- Help in maintaining a directional solidification pattern, ensuring that the casting solidifies toward the riser, thereby concentrating defects within the riser rather than the final product.
