B.Tech | III | III-II | R16 | February - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 136BZMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

State the significance of occurrence of groundwater.

2 marks

Answer

Groundwater is a critical natural resource that serves as a reliable source of water for irrigation, industrial processes, and domestic consumption. It acts as a buffer against drought, maintains base flow in rivers, and supports ecosystems by sustaining soil moisture and wetlands.

b

Define the terms: Porosity, specific yield, specific retention.

3 marks

Answer

Porosity is the ratio of the volume of voids to the total volume of the soil or rock mass. Specific yield is the volume of water that an unconfined aquifer releases from storage per unit surface area per unit decline of the water table. Specific retention is the ratio of the volume of water retained against gravity in the pores to the total volume of the material.

c

Mention the applications of groundwater flow contours.
