Draw a neat sketch of hydrological cycle and depict on it, the distinct items relevant to Civil engineering. Explain how each item influences the formulation of water resources projects.

8 marks

Answer

The hydrological cycle is the continuous movement of water on, above, and below the surface of the Earth. Key components relevant to civil engineering include precipitation, evaporation, transpiration, infiltration, surface runoff, and groundwater flow. A sketch would represent these as a closed loop starting from oceanic evaporation, cloud formation, precipitation over land, interception by vegetation, surface runoff into streams, infiltration into soil, and percolation to aquifers, eventually returning to the sea.

These components influence water resources projects as follows:

  • Precipitation: Determines the total water availability and the design capacity for flood control structures.
  • Evaporation/Transpiration: Critical for estimating reservoir losses and irrigation water requirements.
  • Infiltration: Governs the rate at which water enters the soil, influencing groundwater recharge and the design of drainage systems.
  • Surface Runoff: The primary input for dam design, spillway capacity, and hydroelectric power generation.
  • Groundwater Flow: Essential for assessing the sustainability of tube wells and managing aquifer depletion.

A sub basin with an area of 1038 km2 has 7 stations. The normal annual rainfall depths for all stations are given below. Determine the optimum number of rain gauge stations to be established in the basin if it is desired to limit the error in the mean values of rainfall to 10%. Normal annual rainfalls for seven stations are 62, 94, 62, 47, 32, 88 and 70.

Answer

To determine the optimum number of rain gauge stations, we first calculate the mean (P_avg) and standard deviation (σ) of the existing rainfall data.

P_avg = (62 + 94 + 62 + 47 + 32 + 88 + 70) / 7 = 455 / 7 = 65 cm

Calculating the variance (σ²):

σ² = [Σ(Pi - P_avg)²] / (n - 1)

Sum of squares = (62-65)² + (94-65)² + (62-65)² + (47-65)² + (32-65)² + (88-65)² + (70-65)²

Sum = (-3)² + (29)² + (-3)² + (-18)² + (-33)² + (23)² + (5)² = 9 + 841 + 9 + 324 + 1089 + 529 + 25 = 2826

σ² = 2826 / (7 - 1) = 2826 / 6 = 471
σ = √471 ≈ 21.70 cm

The coefficient of variation (Cv) is:

Cv = (σ / P_avg) * 100 = (21.70 / 65) * 100 = 33.38%

For an allowable error (ε) of 10%, the optimum number of stations (N) is:

N = (Cv / ε)² = (33.38 / 10)² = (3.338)² ≈ 11.14

Rounding up, the optimum number of rain gauge stations required is 12.
