With the help of a neat sketch, explain the attempts made by Sir George Cayley to design and test a full sized airplane. Also discuss the features of ‘Boy carrier’.
Answer
Sir George Cayley, often regarded as the Father of Aviation, transformed the study of flight from the pursuit of flapping-wing ornithopters to the concept of the fixed-wing aircraft. He identified the four forces of flight: lift, weight, thrust, and drag, and proposed a configuration consisting of a fixed wing for lift, a fuselage for the pilot, and a tail unit for stability.
His most significant attempts at full-sized flight included:
- The 1849 Glider: Cayley tested a triplane glider configuration with a 10-year-old boy as the passenger. This was the first recorded instance of a heavier-than-air craft carrying a human in controlled flight, successfully gliding across a valley.
- The 1853 Coachman Glider: This was his most famous full-sized design, a monoplane glider featuring a boat-shaped car for the pilot and a cruciform tail for control. It successfully carried his reluctant coachman across Brompton Dale, marking the first successful manned flight of a full-sized fixed-wing aircraft.
The Boy Carrier refers to the 1849 triplane glider. Its features included:
- Triplane Configuration: It utilized three stacked wings to provide sufficient surface area for lift while maintaining structural rigidity.
- Control Surfaces: It incorporated a rudimentary tail assembly that provided longitudinal and directional stability, a concept Cayley pioneered.
- Pilot Integration: The design featured a simple undercarriage structure that allowed the passenger to be seated safely, demonstrating the separation of the propulsion/lift system from the payload.
Cayley's work established the scientific foundation for modern aeronautics by proving that lift could be generated by curved surfaces and that stability could be achieved through proper geometric design of the tail, rather than through active flapping.
What is the magnitude of microgravity in terms of gravitational force of acceleration of Earth?
Answer
Microgravity refers to an environment where the apparent gravitational force is extremely small, typically ranging from 10-6 to 10-3 g, where g is the standard acceleration due to gravity on Earth (approximately 9.81 m/s2). In this state, objects appear to be weightless because they are in a state of continuous free-fall, such as an orbiting spacecraft where the gravitational pull is balanced by the centripetal acceleration required to maintain orbit.
