What is the history of aerospace? How was it developed to the level of keeping human in the space crafts?

8 marks

Answer

The history of aerospace began with early human fascination with flight, evolving from theoretical designs by Leonardo da Vinci to the first successful controlled flight by the Wright brothers in 1903. The transition to space exploration was accelerated by the development of liquid-propellant rocketry, pioneered by Robert Goddard, and the post-WWII advancements in ballistic missile technology.

The development of human spaceflight required overcoming extreme physiological and technical challenges:

  • Life Support Systems: Engineers developed closed-loop environmental control systems to regulate oxygen, remove carbon dioxide, and manage temperature and humidity within the confined space of a capsule.
  • Radiation Protection: Spacecraft were designed with specialized shielding to protect crews from cosmic rays and solar particle events.
  • Re-entry Technology: The invention of ablative heat shields allowed spacecraft to dissipate the intense thermal energy generated by atmospheric friction during return to Earth.
  • Guidance and Navigation: The integration of inertial measurement units and computer-controlled thrusters enabled precise orbital maneuvers and docking procedures.
  • Human Factors Engineering: Extensive research into the effects of microgravity on the human body led to the development of exercise protocols and specialized nutrition to mitigate muscle atrophy and bone density loss.
b

Explain the law of gravitation and discuss the principles.

7 marks

Answer

The Law of Universal Gravitation, formulated by Isaac Newton, states that every point mass attracts every other point mass in the universe with a force that is directly proportional to the product of their masses and inversely proportional to the square of the distance between their centers.

F = G(m₁m₂ / r²)

Where F is the gravitational force, G is the gravitational constant, m₁ and m₂ are the masses, and r is the distance between the centers of the masses.

Principles of Gravitation:

  • Universality: Gravity acts on all matter possessing mass, regardless of its composition or location.
  • Inverse Square Law: The force diminishes rapidly as the distance between objects increases, following the square of that distance.
  • Action at a Distance: Gravity exerts influence across empty space without physical contact between the bodies involved.
  • Superposition Principle: The total gravitational force acting on a body is the vector sum of the individual gravitational forces exerted by all other surrounding bodies.
  • Equivalence Principle: In a gravitational field, all objects fall with the same acceleration, regardless of their mass, provided no other forces (like air resistance) are acting upon them.

Consider a turbojet-powered airplane flying at a standard altitude of 40,000 ft at a velocity of 530 mi/h. The turbojet engine has inlet and exit areas of 13 and 10 ft2, respectively. The velocity and pressure of the exhaust gas at the exit are 1500 ft/s and 450 lb/ft2, respectively. Calculate the thrust of the turbojet.
