B.Tech | III | I | R16 | March - 2024

Answer PaperPaper Code: 135CZMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Distinguish between the term irradiance and irradiation.

2 marks

Answer

Irradiance is the instantaneous solar power incident on a unit surface area, measured in Watts per square meter (W/m²). Irradiation is the total amount of solar energy incident on a unit surface area over a specific period, measured in Joules per square meter (J/m²) or Watt-hours per square meter (Wh/m²).

b

Explain the variation of Wind speed with consideration of height from the ground.

3 marks

Answer

Wind speed generally increases with height from the ground due to the reduction of surface friction and obstacles. This relationship is typically modeled using the power law equation:

V = V₀ * (H / H₀)ⁿ

Where V is the wind speed at height H, V₀ is the known speed at reference height H₀, and n is the surface roughness coefficient (Hellman exponent), which varies based on the terrain type.
