a

Derive the equation for the speed of sound and discuss their importance in dynamics.

7 marks

Answer

The speed of sound, a, is defined as the rate at which small pressure disturbances propagate through a fluid. For an ideal gas undergoing an isentropic process, the speed of sound is derived from the continuity and momentum equations applied to a control volume containing a normal shock wave of infinitesimal strength. Using the isentropic relation P/ργ = constant, the speed of sound is expressed as:

a = √(γRT) = √(dP/dρ)s

where γ is the ratio of specific heats, R is the specific gas constant, and T is the absolute temperature. In dynamics, this equation is fundamental to defining the Mach number (M = v/a), which dictates the flow regime. It is critical for identifying compressibility effects; when M > 0.3, density changes become significant, requiring the use of compressible flow equations rather than incompressible approximations. It also determines the propagation of pressure waves, which limits the speed at which information about a body's motion can travel through the fluid, directly influencing aerodynamic drag and shock wave formation.

b

State Bernoulli’s equation and define static pressure, dynamic pressure and total pressure.

8 marks

Answer

Bernoulli’s equation states that for an incompressible, steady, inviscid, and irrotational flow along a streamline, the sum of pressure energy, kinetic energy, and potential energy per unit volume remains constant:

P + ½ρv2 + ρgh = constant

In aerodynamics, where potential energy changes are often negligible, the equation is simplified to P + ½ρv2 = P0.

Static pressure (P) is the actual thermodynamic pressure of the fluid, representing the random motion of molecules, measured by a gauge moving with the fluid. Dynamic pressure (q = ½ρv2) represents the kinetic energy per unit volume of the fluid flow, resulting from the directed motion of the fluid particles. Total pressure (P0), also known as stagnation pressure, is the pressure that would exist if the fluid were brought to rest isentropically. It is the sum of static and dynamic pressures, representing the total energy content of the flow.
