JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech IV GROUND WATER HYDROLOGY Previous Question Paper (January/February - 2023 - R18)
Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
PART - A
Elaborate origin of ground water.
Answer
Groundwater originates primarily from the hydrologic cycle, where atmospheric precipitation (rain, snow) infiltrates the soil surface, percolates through the vadose zone, and reaches the saturated zone. Secondary sources include connate water (trapped during rock formation) and magmatic water (released from cooling magma).
What is seepage velocity?
Answer
Seepage velocity (also known as linear velocity or average interstitial velocity) is the actual velocity at which water moves through the interconnected pore spaces of a porous medium. It is calculated as the ratio of Darcy velocity to the effective porosity of the medium.
where v is seepage velocity, V is Darcy velocity, and nₑ is effective porosity.
