Main
List the advantages, disadvantages and applications of Finite Element Method.
Answer
The Finite Element Method (FEM) offers several advantages and disadvantages in structural and fluid analysis:
Advantages:
- It can handle complex geometries and irregular shapes that are difficult to solve analytically.
- It allows for the modeling of non-homogeneous materials and varying material properties across a domain.
- It is highly versatile, capable of handling various boundary conditions and loading scenarios.
- It is easily implemented in computer software, making it suitable for large-scale engineering simulations.
Disadvantages:
- It requires significant computational resources for high-fidelity models.
- The accuracy of the solution is highly dependent on the quality of the mesh and the choice of element type.
- It is an approximate numerical method, meaning errors can accumulate if the discretization is not performed correctly.
Applications:
- Structural analysis of bridges, buildings, and dams.
- Heat transfer analysis in mechanical components.
- Fluid flow analysis in pipes and channels.
- Geotechnical engineering for soil-structure interaction.
Write the general steps involved in Finite Element Method.
Answer
The general steps involved in the Finite Element Method are as follows:
- Discretization of the domain: The continuous physical body is divided into a finite number of smaller, simple sub-regions called elements connected at nodes.
- Selection of displacement function: An interpolation function (shape function) is chosen to represent the variation of the field variable within each element.
- Derivation of element stiffness matrix and load vector: Using energy principles (like the Principle of Minimum Potential Energy) or Galerkin's method, the governing equations are formulated for each element.
- Assembly of global equations: The individual element matrices are assembled into a global stiffness matrix and global load vector by enforcing compatibility and equilibrium at the nodes.
- Application of boundary conditions: Known displacements or forces are applied to the global system to constrain the model.
- Solution of equations: The resulting system of algebraic equations is solved to determine the unknown nodal values (displacements).
- Computation of derived quantities: Once nodal values are found, secondary quantities such as strains, stresses, or internal forces are calculated.
