Find the analytic function whose real part is

ex(x cos y - y sin y)
.

7 marks

Answer

Given the real part u(x, y) = ex(x cos y - y sin y). To find the analytic function f(z) = u + iv, we use the Milne-Thomson method. First, calculate the partial derivatives:

ux = ex(x cos y - y sin y) + ex(cos y) = ex((x + 1) cos y - y sin y)
uy = ex(-x sin y - sin y - y cos y) = -ex((x + 1) sin y + y cos y)

Let φ1(x, y) = ux and φ2(x, y) = uy. Setting x = z and y = 0:

φ1(z, 0) = ez((z + 1) cos 0 - 0) = (z + 1)ez
φ2(z, 0) = -ez((z + 1) sin 0 + 0) = 0

The analytic function is given by f(z) = ∫(φ1(z, 0) - iφ2(z, 0)) dz = ∫(z + 1)ez dz. Integrating by parts:

f(z) = (z + 1)ez - ∫ez dz = (z + 1)ez - ez + C = zez + C

Show that if u is harmonic and v is a harmonic conjugate of u, then u is a harmonic conjugate of v.

8 marks

Answer

If u is harmonic, it satisfies the Laplace equation uxx + uyy = 0. If v is a harmonic conjugate of u, the Cauchy-Riemann equations hold: ux = vy and uy = -vx.

To show that u is a harmonic conjugate of v, we must show that v and -u satisfy the Cauchy-Riemann equations, specifically vx = (-u)y and vy = -(-u)x, which simplifies to vx = -uy and vy = ux.

From the definition of harmonic conjugate, we have ux = vy and uy = -vx. Rearranging these gives:

vx = -uy
vy = ux

These are exactly the Cauchy-Riemann equations for the function g(z) = v + i(-u). Since u and v are harmonic and satisfy these equations, -u is the harmonic conjugate of v.
