JNTU B.Tech II STRENGTH OF MATERIALS – I Previous Question Paper (April/May - 2023 - R15)
Part A is compulsory (25 marks). Part B: Answer any one question from each unit (50 marks). Each question in Part B carries 10 marks.
Part A
Define Poisson’s ratio.
Answer
Poisson’s ratio is defined as the ratio of lateral strain to longitudinal strain for a material subjected to uniaxial loading within the elastic limit. It is denoted by the Greek letter μ or ν.
Distinguish between Elasticity and Plasticity.
Answer
Elasticity is the property of a material by which it regains its original shape and size after the removal of the applied load. In contrast, plasticity is the property by which a material undergoes permanent deformation and retains its new shape even after the removal of the load.

A vertical steel rod 1.8 m long is fixed at its top and a block of weight of 50 kN is dropped from a height of 500 mm on to a collar at the lower end of the steel rod. The upper 1.0 m length of the rod has diameter of 25 mm while the reaming portion has 20 mm diameter. Determine the maximum instantaneous elongation and maximum instantaneous stress induced in the rod.

A simply supported steel beam of span 5 m is subjected to a concentrated load of 450 kN at its mid-span. The beam has I-section with the top flange 200 mm × 16 mm, bottom flange 150 mm × 20 mm, thickness of web is 12 mm and the total depth of the beam section is 300 mm. Draw the shear stress distribution across the depth of the section. Also determine the ratio of maximum shear stress to the mean shear stress.
