Construct a diagonal scale to read up to 0.1 mm, and mark on it a distance of 6.63 cm. Take the scale as 3:1.

7 marks

Answer

The Representative Fraction (RF) is 3:1. To measure up to 0.1 mm, a diagonal scale is required. The maximum length to be measured is assumed to be 10 cm. The length of the scale is calculated as Length of Scale = RF × Maximum Length = 3 × 10 cm = 30 cm.

  1. Draw a line 30 cm long and divide it into 10 equal parts, each representing 1 cm.
  2. Divide the first division into 10 equal parts to represent millimeters (1 mm each).
  3. Erect a perpendicular of 10 divisions and divide it into 10 equal parts to represent 0.1 mm increments using the diagonal principle.
  4. To mark 6.63 cm, locate 6 cm on the main scale, 6 mm on the first subdivision, and move up 3 units (0.3 mm) on the diagonal to achieve the precise measurement.
b

Inscribe an ellipse in a parallelogram of sides 150 × 100 mm with an inclined angle of 120°.

8 marks

Answer

To inscribe an ellipse in a parallelogram with sides 150 mm and 100 mm at an angle of 120°, follow the conjugate diameter method:

  1. Draw the parallelogram ABCD with sides 150 mm and 100 mm at 120°.
  2. Identify the center O by drawing diagonals AC and BD.
  3. Divide the side AD and the half-diagonal AO into the same number of equal parts (e.g., 4 parts).
  4. Label the divisions on AD as 1, 2, 3 and on AO as 1', 2', 3'.
  5. Draw lines from B through points 1, 2, 3 and lines from C through points 1', 2', 3'.
  6. The intersection points of these lines define the curve of the ellipse. Repeat this process for all four quadrants of the parallelogram.
  7. Connect the intersection points with a smooth, continuous curve to form the inscribed ellipse.

A divider opened at 40° is placed on HP with its needle ends equidistant from V.P. If the height of hinged end of divider is 60 mm from H.P. and the distance between needle ends is 50 mm, draw the projections of the divider, and determine the a) true lengths of the divider legs, and b) inclinations of the legs with the HP and VP.
