JAWAHARLAL NEHRU TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY HYDERABAD B.Tech II HYDRAULICS AND HYRAULIC MACHINERY Previous Question Paper (April - 2018 - R15)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.
Part A
Answer all questions. Each question carries marks as indicated.
Differentiate between laminar and turbulent flow.
Answer
In laminar flow, fluid particles move in smooth, parallel layers (laminae) with no macroscopic mixing, typically occurring at low Reynolds numbers. In turbulent flow, fluid particles move in a chaotic, irregular, and fluctuating manner, characterized by intense mixing and eddies at higher Reynolds numbers.
What is specific energy curve?
Answer
The specific energy curve is a graphical representation of the relationship between the specific energy (E) and the depth of flow (y) in an open channel for a constant discharge. It shows two possible depths, known as alternate depths, for a given specific energy, except at the critical depth where specific energy is minimum.

A jet of water of diameter 50 mm moving with a velocity of 25 m/s impinges on a fixed curved plate tangentially at one end at an angle of 30º to the horizontal. Calculate the resultant force of the jet on the plate if the jet is deflected through an angle of 50º. Take g = 10 m/s2.
