Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART - A

125 marks
a

What do you understand by ‘Equilibrium’ and ‘compatibility’ condition?

2 marks

Answer

Equilibrium conditions ensure that the sum of all forces and moments acting on a structure is zero, maintaining static stability. Compatibility conditions ensure that the deformed shape of the structure remains continuous and consistent with the support constraints, meaning no gaps or overlaps occur at joints.

b

Mention the merits of indeterminate structures over determinate structure.

3 marks

Answer

Indeterminate structures offer several advantages: 1) They are generally more stable and have higher redundancy, meaning if one member fails, the structure can often redistribute loads. 2) They typically result in smaller member sizes and reduced deflections compared to determinate structures. 3) They provide better economy in material usage due to the redistribution of internal forces.

c

What is the difference between method of joints and method of sections for the truss analysis?
