JNTU B.Tech III GEOTECHNICAL ENGINEERING Previous Question Paper (May - 2018 - R13)
Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.
PART - A
A fully saturated soil sample has a water content of 35% and specific gravity of 2.65. Determine its porosity, saturated unit weight and dry unit weight.
Answer
Given: w = 0.35, G = 2.65, S = 1.0 (fully saturated). Using Se = wG, void ratio e = 0.35 × 2.65 = 0.9275. Porosity n = e / (1 + e) = 0.9275 / 1.9275 = 0.481 or 48.1%. Saturated unit weight γ_sat = ((G + e) / (1 + e)) × γ_w = ((2.65 + 0.9275) / 1.9275) × 9.81 = 18.22 kN/m³. Dry unit weight γ_d = (G × γ_w) / (1 + e) = (2.65 × 9.81) / 1.9275 = 13.49 kN/m³.
A clay soil has a liquid limit of 62% and plastic limit of 34%. Classify the soil as per the IS classification.
Answer
Plasticity Index (Ip) = Liquid Limit (LL) - Plastic Limit (PL) = 62% - 34% = 28%. According to the A-line equation, A-line = 0.73(LL - 20) = 0.73(62 - 20) = 30.66%. Since Ip (28%) < A-line (30.66%) and LL > 50%, the soil is classified as MH (Silt of high compressibility).

PART - B
A clay soil has a liquid limit of 52%. The volume of the soil sample in the shrinkage dish at the liquid limit is 0.0401 × 10-3 m3 and its shrinks to a volume of 0.0261 × 10-3 m3 at the shrinkage limit. The specific gravity of solids is 2.72. Determine the shrinkage limit of the soil.

A vane of 80 mm diameter and 160 mm height has been pushed into an in-situ soft clay at the bottom of a bore hole. The torque required to rotate the vane was 76 N-m. Determine the undrained shear strength of the clay. After the test, the vane was rotated several times and the ultimate torque was found to be 50 N-m. Estimate the sensitivity of the clay.
