JNTU B.Tech III WATER RESOURCES ENGINEERING-II Previous Question Paper (December - 2018 - R15)
This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit.
Part A
How dams are classified?
Answer
Dams are primarily classified based on their function (storage, diversion, or detention), structural material (masonry, concrete, earth, rockfill, or timber), and hydraulic design (overflow or non-overflow dams).
Differentiate between a flood control reservoir and a multipurpose reservoir.
Answer
A flood control reservoir is designed specifically to store excess runoff during peak flow periods to prevent downstream flooding, often remaining empty otherwise. A multipurpose reservoir is designed to serve several objectives simultaneously, such as irrigation, power generation, water supply, and flood control, requiring complex storage allocation.

A weir on a permeable foundation has a level floor of negligible thickness and is 20 m long in the direction of flow. At the U/s end of the floor a 4 m deep pile is provided and at its D/s end a 5 m deep pile is provided. Using Khosla’s theory calculate the uplift pressures at the key points D and C for the upstream pile and E and D for the downstream pile. Also calculate the exit gradient. The effective head of water may be assumed as 4m.
