Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.
Part A
What is a bridge? What is the importance of studying bridge Engineering?
Answer
A bridge is a structure built to span a physical obstacle, such as a body of water, valley, or road, to provide passage over the obstacle. Studying Bridge Engineering is essential to ensure the safety, durability, and economic efficiency of transportation infrastructure, enabling the design of structures capable of resisting complex environmental and traffic loads.
Explain in brief about effect of wind and thermal forces on bridges
Answer
Wind forces exert lateral pressure on the superstructure, which can cause swaying or overturning, requiring aerodynamic design and robust bracing. Thermal forces arise from temperature variations causing expansion and contraction of bridge materials; if restricted, these movements induce significant internal stresses, necessitating the use of expansion joints and bearings to allow for movement.
