Explain about soil structures with a neat sketch.
Answer
Soil structure refers to the geometric arrangement of soil particles and the nature of the forces acting between them. The primary types include:
- Single-grained structure: Typical of coarse-grained soils like sand, where gravitational forces dominate and particles settle in a dense or loose state.
- Honeycombed structure: Found in fine silts, where surface tension during deposition creates a stable, arch-like structure with large voids.
- Flocculated structure: Occurs in clay particles due to net attractive forces, resulting in an edge-to-face orientation and a loose, open fabric.
- Dispersed structure: Occurs in clay when net repulsive forces dominate, causing particles to align face-to-face, resulting in a dense, parallel arrangement.
A sketch would illustrate these arrangements: single-grained as a pile of spheres, honeycombed as a series of interconnected arches, flocculated as random edge-to-face clusters, and dispersed as parallel horizontal layers.
Derive the relation between dry unit weight, unit weight of water, specific gravity of solids and void ratio.
Answer
To derive the relationship between dry unit weight (γd), unit weight of water (γw), specific gravity of solids (G), and void ratio (e), we use the definitions of phase relationships.
The dry unit weight is defined as the weight of solids divided by the total volume:
We know that the weight of solids is:
Where Vs is the volume of solids. The total volume V is the sum of the volume of solids and the volume of voids (Vv):
Dividing by Vs, we get:
Therefore, V = Vs(1 + e). Substituting these into the expression for γd:
Canceling Vs from the numerator and denominator yields the final relationship:
A soil has bulk density of 19kN/m3 and water content of 25%. Calculate the water content if the soil partially dries to a density of 17.5 kN/m3 and the void ratio do not change.
