iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

How do you assess a soil is loose or dense?

2 marks

Answer

The density of soil is assessed primarily through field tests such as the Standard Penetration Test (SPT) or Cone Penetration Test (CPT). A low N-value from SPT (typically less than 10) indicates loose soil, while a high N-value (greater than 30) indicates dense soil. Relative density (Dr) is also used for granular soils, where Dr < 30% denotes loose and Dr > 70% denotes dense soil.

b

What are the treatment methods of cohesive soils?

3 marks

Answer

Treatment methods for cohesive soils include: 1) Preloading with vertical drains (PVDs) to accelerate consolidation, 2) Stabilization using chemical additives like lime or cement, 3) Electro-osmosis to induce water flow in low-permeability clays, and 4) Thermal stabilization or vacuum consolidation.
