Construct a diagonal scale when 1 km distance represents on a drawing with a length of 3 cm to read upto 6 km. Mark on it a length of 3.54 km on this scale.

7 marks

Answer

First, calculate the Representative Fraction (R.F.): R.F. = Length of drawing / Actual length = 3 cm / 1 km = 3 cm / 100,000 cm = 3/100,000. The length of the scale (L.O.S.) = R.F. × Maximum length = (3/100,000) × 6 km = 18 cm. Draw a line 18 cm long and divide it into 6 equal parts, each representing 1 km. Divide the first part into 10 equal divisions to represent hectometers (0.1 km). To represent 0.04 km, use the diagonal scale principle: divide the vertical height into 10 equal parts and draw horizontal lines. Use the diagonal lines to subdivide the hectometer divisions into 10 equal parts (each representing 0.01 km). To mark 3.54 km, place one end of the divider at the 3 km mark and the other at the intersection of the 5th hectometer division and the 4th diagonal division.

A circle of 4 cm diameter rolls outside a generating circle of 14 cms diameter for one complete revolution without slipping. Trace a point’s path on the circumference of circle.

8 marks

Answer

This path is an epicycloid. Given diameter of rolling circle (d) = 4 cm (radius r = 2 cm) and diameter of generating circle (D) = 14 cm (radius R = 7 cm). The angle subtended by the arc of the generating circle for one revolution is θ = (r/R) × 360° = (2/7) × 360° ≈ 102.86°. Draw the generating circle with radius R = 7 cm and mark the center C. Draw the rolling circle tangent to the generating circle at point P. Divide the rolling circle into 12 equal parts. Calculate the positions of the center of the rolling circle as it rotates around the generating circle along an arc of radius (R+r) = 9 cm. For each division on the rolling circle, draw the corresponding arc of the rolling circle center and mark the path of point P by drawing arcs of radius r = 2 cm. Connect these points with a smooth curve to obtain the epicycloid.
