B.Tech | I Year | I-I | R13 | December - 2018

Answer PaperPaper Code: 111ABMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 hours

Note: This question paper contains two parts A and B. Part A is compulsory which carries 25 marks. Answer all questions in Part A. Part B consists of 5 Units. Answer any one full question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b, c as sub questions.

Part A

125 marks
a

Examine the consistency of the following system of equations: 12x - y - z = 2; x + 2y + z = 2; 4x - 7y - 5z = 2.

2 marks

Answer

The augmented matrix [A|B] is:

[12 -1 -1 | 2; 1 2 1 | 2; 4 -7 -5 | 2]

Reducing to row echelon form, we find the rank of the coefficient matrix ρ(A) = 2 and the rank of the augmented matrix ρ(A|B) = 3. Since ρ(A) ≠ ρ(A|B), the system is inconsistent and has no solution.

b

Find A2 using Cayley-Hamilton theorem, given A = [3 1; -1 2].

3 marks

Answer

The characteristic equation is |A - λI| = 0, which is λ2 - 5λ + 7 = 0. By Cayley-Hamilton theorem, A2 - 5A + 7I = 0, so A2 = 5A - 7I.

A2 = 5[3 1; -1 2] - 7[1 0; 0 1] = [15 5; -5 10] - [7 0; 0 7] = [8 5; -5 3]
c
