Part A
What is Multiplexing?
Answer
Multiplexing is the set of techniques that allows the simultaneous transmission of multiple signals across a single data link. By combining multiple input signals into one composite signal, it enables the efficient utilization of shared communication resources, such as bandwidth, thereby reducing the overall cost of transmission.
Mention the need of Virtual Circuit Networks.
Answer
Virtual Circuit (VC) networks are needed to provide connection-oriented communication services in packet-switched networks. Their primary purposes include:
- Guaranteed Quality of Service: By establishing a dedicated path before data transmission, VC networks can reserve resources such as bandwidth and buffer space, ensuring more predictable latency and jitter for real-time applications.
- In-order Delivery: Since all packets follow the same pre-established path, they arrive at the destination in the same sequence they were sent, eliminating the need for complex reordering at the receiver.
- Reduced Header Overhead: Once the virtual circuit is set up, packets only need to carry a short virtual circuit identifier (VCI) rather than the full source and destination addresses, which simplifies routing decisions at each intermediate switch.
