Answer PaperPaper Code: 153CEMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

PART – A

1.a

State division algorithm.

2 marks

Answer

The division algorithm states that for any two integers a and b, where b > 0, there exist unique integers q (the quotient) and r (the remainder) such that:

a = bq + r, where 0 ≤ r < b
1.b

Mention any two examples for linear congruences.

3 marks

Answer

A linear congruence is a congruence of the form ax ≡ b (mod m). Two examples are:

  1. 3x ≡ 6 (mod 9): Here, a=3, b=6, and m=9. Since gcd(3, 9) = 3 and 3 divides 6, this congruence has three distinct solutions: x ≡ 2, 5, 8 (mod 9).
  2. 5x ≡ 3 (mod 7): Here, a=5, b=3, and m=7. Since gcd(5, 7) = 1, this congruence has a unique solution. Multiplying by the modular multiplicative inverse of 5 modulo 7 (which is 3), we get x ≡ 9 ≡ 2 (mod 7).
