B.Tech | II | I | R18 | April/May - 2023

Answer PaperPaper Code: 153CHMaximum Marks: 75Time: 3 Hours

Note: i) Question paper consists of Part A, Part B. ii) Part A is compulsory, which carries 25 marks. In Part A, Answer all questions. iii) In Part B, Answer any one question from each unit. Each question carries 10 marks and may have a, b as sub questions.

Part A

Answer all questions.

1.a

What are Fermat numbers?

2 marks

Answer

A Fermat number is a positive integer of the form

Fn = 22n + 1
where n is a non-negative integer. These numbers were first studied by Pierre de Fermat, who conjectured that all such numbers are prime; however, it has since been proven that this holds true only for n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4.

1.b

Which decimal digits occur as the final digit of a fourth power of an integer?

3 marks

Answer

To determine the possible final digits of a fourth power of an integer, we examine the fourth powers of the digits 0 through 9 modulo 10:

  • 04 = 0 ≡ 0 (mod 10)
  • 14 = 1 ≡ 1 (mod 10)
  • 24 = 16 ≡ 6 (mod 10)
  • 34 = 81 ≡ 1 (mod 10)
  • 44 = 256 ≡ 6 (mod 10)
  • 54 = 625 ≡ 5 (mod 10)
  • 64 = 1296 ≡ 6 (mod 10)
  • 74 = 2401 ≡ 1 (mod 10)
  • 84 = 4096 ≡ 6 (mod 10)
  • 94 = 6561 ≡ 1 (mod 10)

The set of final digits that occur is {0, 1, 5, 6}.
